
PI: Fumika Hamada,PhD
Fumika Hamada is an associate professor in the NPB department. She received a BS, MS and PhD, all in biology, from Tokyo University of Science in 1999, 2001 and 2004, respectively. She moved to Harvard Medical School where she conducted postdoctoral research in biology and genetics from 2004-2005 with Mitzi Kuroda, PhD. In 2005, she continued postdoctoral research at MIT / Brandeis University in neurobiology with Paul Garrity, PhD. In September 2009, she began her own lab at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Her lab moved to UC Davis in July 2021

Tadahiro Goda, PhD, Assistant Project Scientist
Tadahiro Goda received a PhD in biology at Kyushu University, Japan in 2001. He worked at the National Institute for Medical Research, UK, as a research associate developing amphibian genetic approaches using Xenopus tropicalis from 2002 to 2006. He then moved to the University of Virginia to study Drosophila circadian clocks from 2007 to 2011. Since November 2011, he has worked in the Hamada Lab revealing the molecular and neural mechanisms of Drosophila temperature preference rhythms.

Richard Ramolete, BS, MCIP Graduate Student
Richard graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a B.S. in Molecular and Medical Microbiology and a minor in English. He began his research career in the Hamada Lab as an undergraduate researcher and later transitioned to a Junior Specialist position in August 2023. His interests lie in the relationship between the circadian rhythm, body temperature, and sleep. Now, he is continuing to pursue this research with a PhD in Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology. Outside of the lab, he enjoys writing short stories, baking/cooking, and dancing.

Thy Pham
Thy is a Human Biology and History double-major. After her undergraduate studies, she plans on going to nursing school. Outside of the lab and classes, she enjoys listening to music, crocheting, and walking around the Davis campus.

Galen Guo
Galen Guo is an undergraduate majoring in Biochemical Engineering, with plans on graduating in 2026. He began his work in Hamada Lab during the spring of 2024.

Peixin "Sherry" He
Peixin He is an undergraduate student majoring in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior at UC Davis. She joined the Hamada Lab in April 2024 to explore and develop research skills for graduate school. She is most interested in optogenetics.

Alison Young
Alison is an undergraduate majoring in Biological Sciences and minoring in Human Development and Art Studio. She plans to graduate in 2026 and pursue a career working with children in the medical or educational field. In her free time, she likes painting, sewing, roller skating, and skateboarding! Alison joined the Hamada lab in Fall 2024

Dylan Nguyen
Dylan Nguyen is an undergraduate student majoring in Human Biology at the University of California, Davis. He plans on graduating in 2026. He is currently pursuing a career in dentistry. Dylan joined the Hamada Lab in the Winter of 2025.

Berenice Merida Mateo
Berenice Merida is an undergraduate student at UC Davis. Majoring in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior planning to graduate in 2027. In hopes of attending medical school in the near future. She enjoys cooking and spending quality time with friends. She joined the Hamada Lab in Spring of 2025.

Arsh Alam
Arsh is a Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior major with aspirations of pursuing a career in medicine. Outside of academics, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, drawing, listening to music, and playing badminton.

Gakuto Ishii
Gakuto Ishii is an international undergraduate student from Japan from March 2025 to March 2026. He is majoring in biological sciences, but plans to pursue his career in neuroscience or cognitive science.

Olivia Lopez, BS, Entomology Graduate Student
Olivia received a BS in Psychobiology from UCLA in 2021. After moving to Denver, Colorado to teach middle school science, she returned to California as a Junior Specialist with the Hamada Lab. Here, she researched the neural circuits and mechanisms underlying circadian body temperature rhythms in Drosophila. She will continue this research as a PhD student in the Entomology Graduate Group with plans to remain in higher education. In her free time, Olivia loves to rock climb, bake, sketch, and paint.​

Gregory Bui, BS, Junior Specialist
Gregory Bui is an undergraduate student majoring in Molecular and Medical Microbiology at UC Davis. He plans to graduate in the Spring of 2024, with the hopes of attending medical school in the years following. Gregory began working in the Hamada Lab in the Fall of 2023. In July 2025, he began his stint as a Junior Specialist in the Hamada Lab.

Phoebe Nicholas
Phoebe is a fourth year Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior major at UC Davis. She has been with the Hamada Lab since Spring 2023 and is pursuing a career in clinical mental health counseling after graduation.

Yifei Cai
Yifei Cai is an undergraduate student majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She is interested in understanding the molecular mechanism of physiology and neuroscience because they heavily influence the wellness of species, including us as humans. She looks forward to working with the Hamada Lab to expand my knowledge and better prepare for future study in graduate school.

Nikita Raj
Nikita is an undergraduate student working on her B.S. in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior with a minor in Sociology at UC Davis. After graduating she will pursue a career in medicine and research. She enjoys traveling and spending time on the beach with her dog.

Michelle Khine
Michelle is an undergraduate student majoring in Genetics and Genomics and is planning to minor in Bioinformatics. She plans to graduate in 2027 and hopes to pursue a career in the biotechnology industry. She likes to watch K-dramas and read books in her free time. Michelle joined the Hamada Lab in Fall 2024.

Jacy Auyeung
Jacy Auyeung is an undergraduate student majoring in Molecular and Medical Microbiology at UC Davis. After graduating in June of 2027, she aims to attend veterinary school and pursue a career in the veterinary field. In her free time, she enjoys gaming and spending time with friends! She joined the Hamada Lab in Spring 2025.

Carine Matthew
Carine is an undergraduate student majoring in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior with a minor in Public Health. She plans to graduate in 2027 and is interested in pursuing a career in medicine.

Gabryel Palamiano
Gabryel Palamiano is an undergraduate student studying Human Biology at the University of California, Davis. After graduating in Spring 2027, he plans to pursue a career in the medical field.
